A mechanical chain, intended for power transmission, has a low wear rate throughout its life if it has been properly designed. However, a chain can suffer from stretching and oscillations whose amplitude increases exponentially.

Any onset of wear reduces the thickness of the sprocket teeth, makes them asymmetrical because of metal loss and results in vibration phenomena.

A chain in normal operation is driven by the edge of the teeth; if the wear is excessive it can skip over the top of the teeth. The wear is amplified until the chain derails.

Therefore, the wear is particularly located at the surface contacts of the teeth/rollers/pins.

The lubricant used must therefore penetrate and access these surfaces.

Consequently, external lubrication isn’t much use.

At very high levels of motorcycle sport, the mechanics and riders even have the practice of wiping off excess lubricant from the chain surface with a clean cloth.

Several years ago, it was discovered, within the framework of research into Supra friction, that to obtain ultra-low micro-friction, the most important condition for obtaining this micro-friction (coefficient 1/20° = 0.05 ) was the absolute cleanliness of the surfaces.

It is the same for chain lubrication; to minimise friction, and therefore wear, you must apply a lubricant that penetrates and apply it to a clean transmission chain.
